When:

2 nights in September 2010 and 2011

We love a throwback here at Piggl so we bring you a trip down memory lane to this fabulous campsite on the south shore of Loch Leven in the beautiful Scottish Highlands. We visited this campsite in 2010 and again in 2011 in our old campervan - our faithful Vivaro. These trips were before we got married and before we had our daughter so we were able to spend long days hiking on the Glencoe pass.

THE CAMPSITE:

The main thing to know about this campsite is that its location is simply breathtaking. The level camping fields are right on the edge of Loch Leven with unspoilt views of the mountains surrounding it. We visited in the off-peak season when the campsite was fairly quiet and we were able to secure a spot for our campervan right on the edge of the loch with the side door looking out over the water without another camper in sight… sheer bliss!

FACILITIES:

Since we visited back in the day, the campsite has expanded to include fully-equipped, self-catering, 6-berth caravans as well as pitches for tents, motorhomes, campervans and caravans. The best news for the campervanners amongst us is that there are 16 amp electric hook-ups dotted around the site which operate on a ‘first come first served’ basis and there is no extra charge for using them! Pitches are not assigned so you are free to find the best spot to suit you.

On site there is a newly-refurbished toilet block with wash basins, free hot showers, electric shaver points and a socket to plug in your own styling appliances (what a rare treat for a campsite!). There is also a coin operated laundry and chemical disposal point. NOTE: Covid-19 restrictions are currently in place so please check their website for latest requirements before visiting.

The loch-side location is popular for water sports enthusiasts and if you bring your own watersports equipment you can launch boats, paddle boards and canoes etc onto the loch.

NEARBY:

Caolasnacon Campsite is located just outside of Kinlochleven and a short drive from Glencoe mountain ranges. We opted to spend the day hiking and set off to scale the highest mountain ‘Bidean nam Bian’ whose dramatic northern ridges are known as ‘the Three Sisters’. This fantastic hike took us 6 hours and featured waterfalls, boggy paths, rocky ridge walk along ‘the Toast Rack’. The views from the top were amazing and well worth the effort. You can find a similar walk here

With sore feet and tired legs, we treated ourselves to a well deserved post-walk drink and hot food at the cosy Claghaig Inn before returning to the comfort of our van.

With the sun shining at the end of the day we sat by the side of our campervan, drinks in hand, radio on and watched the sun set behind the loch.

WHAT WE DIDN’T LIKE:

This campsite is hard to fault. As it is a choose-your-own-pitch you might not get the prime location you’d desire to enjoy the view over the loch.

WHAT WE LIKED:

The location is amazing and the views are hard to beat. After writing this review, I definitely think we are long overdue for another visit!
