Penrhyn Bay Caravan Park is a perennial favourite here at Piggl. Located on the stunning west coast of Anglesey in North Wales, we have stayed here for a weekend in May for the past couple of years along with our friends - all families with two children - it's a lot of VW campervans!
THE CAMPSITE:
The park itself should definitely be booked well in advance, particularly during peak periods. You will be given a code in advance to gain access through the barriers onto the site and then met by the owner on his quad bike who will take a £10 refundable deposit for keycards (that are used for the duration of your stay for accessing the bathroom and washing up facilities) and then show you to your pitch.
We had booked a non-electric grass camping pitch for our VW T5 Campervan and the very flat camping field is directly adjacent to the electric pitches so you can buddy up with friends if their vans need electric hook up. The site caters mainly to statics, caravans or hardstanding pitches so fortunately for us there are no marked camping-only pitches so we were allowed to pick our own spot. The camping field is right on the edge of the headland and drops down (although not steeply) onto the beach and coves below. The kids all spent happy hours climbing rocks and splashing in the edge of the sea whilst we unpacked and set up camp.
FACILITIES:
On the site itself there is a shop, children’s playground, indoor heated swimming pool (with small extra charge) and a games room. There is a large bathroom block with plenty of hot showers, toilets and a hairdryer for 50p! There is also a laundry room and waste disposal point. TIP: Don’t forget your key card as you will need it to open the doors to the toilet block and washing up facilities and it's so annoying if you forget it!
A short two minute walk from a gate at the side of the camping field is a slipway giving you direct access onto a large sandy beach with views over the Irish Sea. You can book with the campsite to launch your own boat on the slipway and pay a small fee for a tow.
We immediately donned our wetsuits, pumped up our paddleboards and spent a lovely day paddling in the sea, building sandcastles and enjoying the sunshine. There is also a shop at the end of the slipway selling ice creams and a pub is only a ten minute stroll down the coastal path if you want to grab a meal or have a sundowner.
NEARBY:
Fortunately, this region of Wales is often described as having its own microclimate and we have always experienced amazing weather on our visits to make the most of the beachside location. If you want to explore the region there are plenty of coastal walks and other beaches to visit. We spent a wonderful day at Greenwood Family Park which is an eco-friendly theme park aimed at younger children and only a short drive from Penrhyn Bay Caravan Park.
We really enjoy this site for its beachside access and the fact that as a group of friends with young children we can all arrive, set up camp together without designated pitches and let the kids explore in a safe environment. We will definitely be back again next year!
WHAT WE DIDN'T LIKE:
This large site can be fully booked during peak periods and can feel a bit busy, but we never queued for showers! If you’re after a quiet, couples weekend I‘d look elsewhere.
WHAT WE LIKED:
Having direct access to the beach is the best thing about this site. Bring along wetsuits, paddleboards, kayaks or even just a bucket and spade and you’re all set. Plus, you're only a short stroll to a hot shower to get the sand out of your toes!
